About the Company:

This federal government agency is undertaking major work programs to deliver innovative solutions. As part of the Experience Design team, you will be part of a small and close-knit group of professionals who strive to make a difference for stakeholders and users. 

About the Role:

Reporting the Director of the Experience Design team, the Digital Accessibility Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Developing prototypes of screens and components using web technologies (code snippets) to evaluate and demonstrate design concepts and evaluate accessibility support
  • Supporting the user researchers, developers, and designers in the design and development of world-class accessible digital products and systems in each phase of the product lifecycle
  • Reviewing prototypes in collaboration with designers to identify content and visual design-related accessibility issues early in the product lifecycle
  • Providing high-quality, accurate, and timely advice about user behaviour, digital accessibility, and assistive technologies to stakeholders
  • Contributing to the design and delivery of usability testing with people with disability
  • Evangelising accessibility-first digital product and system design and development throughout the organisation 
  • Lead any accessibility-related design and development work and collaborate with analysts, product owners, developers, testers, and project and delivery managers in multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience: 
  • This is a senior position requiring at least 5 years of experience working in a fast-paced and multi-disciplinary team delivering high-quality and wide-ranging accessibility-related outputs
  • An understanding of how people with disability use digital products and systems and the functional impact of impairments, injury, and health conditions on accessibility 
  • A solid knowledge of interaction and content design principles, best practices, and industry trends and an understanding of web technologies such as web browsers, the basics of system architectures, and the workings of common assistive technologies
  • A detailed understanding of WCAG guidelines, including how it is commonly interpreted and applied, and its shortcomings and limitations
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with common assistive technologies such as screen magnifiers, speech-to-text applications, screen readers, and operating system accessibility features and accessibility-related utilities
  • Knowledge of ARIA and related WAI documentation, and of how ARIA can be used in complex user interface design and development
  • Basic skills with and knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or common front-end frameworks or libraries.
