How we are different

The same seven stages. Handled differently.

Every agency runs a version of the same process. The difference shows up in how each stage is actually done, and that is where most searches are won or lost.

  • The brief

A job description is forwarded and the search begins from the ad.

A conversation about the team, the work, the reporting line and what will genuinely appeal to a strong candidate.

  • Sourcing

Keyword search, job board applications, whoever is actively looking that week.

A network built over years in this market, approached directly. Most of the people we place were not applying.

  • Screening

A phone screen for availability and salary, then the resume is forwarded.

A technical conversation with a consultant who recruits the discipline, plus evidence of delivery.

  • The shortlist

Volume. Eight resumes so the client feels the fee is justified.

Three or four people who could each do the role, with a written view on the trade-offs between them.

  • Salary advice

Agreement with whatever budget is quoted, then surprise when nobody accepts.

Benchmarking against our own placement data and salary guide, told to you before you go to market.

  • The offer

The offer is emailed and everyone hopes for the best.

Counter-offer risk, notice period and resignation conversation worked through before the offer is made.

  • After the start date

    Invoice sent, contact ends.

Check-ins at week one, month one and month three, with you and the new starter separately.

Why BLACKROC

Eight reasons employers keep coming back

In permanent recruitment, 194 of the 313 companies we've placed with since 2018 (62%) have hired with us again. Select any card for the detail behind it.

Software engineering, cloud, data, AI, cyber, project services, QA, digital. Your consultant talks to people in that field every day, so candidates are assessed technically before they reach your inbox.

Our office is in Brisbane and it is the market we know best, including who is hiring, who is moving and what teams are paying. We recruit permanent roles across Queensland and nationally, including remote-capable positions.

Twenty-six years in the same market means we can approach the people who are performing well elsewhere. Advertising reaches the actively looking. Referrals and direct approaches reach everyone else.

We send a small shortlist within 48 hours, with a written view on each person and the trade-offs between them. Our interview to offer ratio sits at roughly one in three, which means your leadership team spends its hours well.

We publish an annual salary guide built on roles we have actually filled. If the approved band will not attract the person described in the brief, we tell you at briefing rather than three months later.

No handover to a delivery team, no account manager relaying messages. You deal with the consultant who took the brief, from first call through to the start date.

Where a role cannot be advertised because the incumbent is still in the seat, we approach the market without naming you until it is appropriate. This is routine work for us.

We would rather compete on retention than on volume. Every permanent placement carries a replacement guarantee period, agreed in writing before the search begins.

How we recruit

Brief to start date, in eight steps

Most permanent searches run to this shape. Select a step to see what happens and what you receive.

Day 1

We take the brief properly

A conversation rather than a form. What the team is building, who the person reports to, what the first six months look like, where the role sits on salary, and what would make a strong candidate say yes. If anything in the brief will make the search harder, we say so now.

What you get at this step

  • Role scope agreed
  • Salary benchmarked
  • Search plan and timeline
What it costs you

The hire is rarely the expensive part

A hiring manager running a permanent search alone loses most of a working week to screening, scheduling and follow-up. That is a week away from delivery, and it is why roles sit open for months.

  • 6-10 hrsScreening time per roleReviewing applications, chasing availability and running first calls. That work still has to happen, it just does not have to happen to you.
  • 3-4Candidates you interviewA short shortlist means your leadership team spends its hours on people who could genuinely do the role.
  • 48 hrsFrom brief to shortlistMost searches produce a first shortlist inside two working days, because the network already exists.
How we assess

What happens before a resume reaches you

Every candidate on your shortlist has had a structured interview with a specialist consultant. Six things get covered every time.

You receive a written summary for each person, including the gaps. Anything we are unsure about, we flag rather than gloss over.

  • Technical depth

A conversation with a consultant who recruits the discipline. What they have built, which decisions were theirs, and where they would do it differently now.

  • Evidence of delivery

Specific projects, team sizes, timelines and outcomes. Titles vary enormously between organisations, so we work from the work rather than the label.

  • Reason for moving

Why now, what they are looking for, and what they would turn down. A candidate who cannot answer this clearly is usually not ready to move.

  • How they work with others

Most technology hires succeed or fail on how they operate alongside product, delivery and the business. We test for it rather than assume it.

  • References and checks

Reference checks, right to work verification, qualification validation and police or security clearance checks where the role requires them.

  • Salary and notice, up front

Expectations, current package, notice period and any competing processes confirmed before the shortlist so nothing derails the offer later.

After the start date

The placement is the beginning, not the end

In permanent recruitment, 194 of the 313 companies we've placed with since 2018 (62%) have hired with us again. So we keep talking to both sides well past the invoice.

  • Week one

A call with you and the new starter separately, to catch anything early.

  • Month one and three

Structured check-ins through the period where most hires either settle or slip.

  • Replacement guarantee

Agreed in writing before the search begins, not negotiated afterwards.
